The brief was to attract foreign investment into Bahrain against competition from other Gulf countries like UAE and Qatar. 'Business friendly’ said Bahrain was open for business; it also worked as a mantra for staff at Bahrain's Economic Development Board. ‘Friendly’ suggested too that Bahrain is a pleasant place to live. In fact, Bahrain is something of an expat oasis. It's an easy place for Western families to make a home in, especially compared to Saudi Arabia, just across the King Fahd Causeway. I worked with management consultants McKinsey on the information side, and then wrote websites and brochures. The 'business friendly' idea even ended up on Bahrain's stamps.
